Episode Narrative | Torrential record rainfall, which caused serious widespread urban, small stream, and river flooding, preceded the remnants of Hurricane Floyd, which passed over Western Suffolk County of Long Island from 7 pm to 9 pm on September 16th. Deaths: Flooding caused 3 deaths: 2 in Bergen County and 1 in Passaic County. In Bergen County, a 53 year old man and a 27 year old man drowned in their cars. In Passaic County, an 82 year old man drowned in his house. Property Damage: State-wide, the initial cost estimates for damage to only the public sector was $67 million dollars. For Passaic, Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Union Counties, the initial cost estimates were $35.5 million dollars. These estimates do not account for damage in the private sector. This information was provided by the New Jersey State Police Office of Emergency Management. Urban Flooding: Serious widespread flooding of low-lying and poor drainage areas resulted in the closure of many roads and basement flooding across the entire region. Stream and River Flooding: Many streams and rivers overflowed their banks and caused significant short- and long-term flooding for many communities. In Passaic County: The Molly Ann Brook at North Haledon was above its' flood stage of 6 ft. from 11:25 am on the 16th through 8:45 pm on the 16th. The crest stage of 9.4 ft. occurred at 5:15 pm on the 16th. The Passaic River at Little Falls was above its' flood stage of 7 ft. from 4 pm on the 16th through 8 pm on the 20th. The crest stage of 9.99 ft. occurred at 10 pm on the 17th. The Ramapo River at Pompton Lakes was above its' flood stage of 11.8 ft. from 10 pm on the 16th through 2 am on the 18th. The crest stage of 13.02 ft. occurred at 1 am on the 17th. In Bergen County: The Hohokus Brook at Ho-Ho-Kus was above its' flood stage of 3 ft. from 12:15 pm on the 16th until 5:30 am on the 17th. The crest stage of 7.32 ft. occurred at 7:15 pm on the 16th. (This was more than a 100 year flood.) The Hackensack River at the New Milford gage experienced a greater than 100 year flow event. The peak stage was 11.45 ft., which is the highest recorded in 78 years of record. The Saddle River at Lodi experienced record flooding. The new peak stage was 13.94 feet. (This was more than a 100-year flood.) The Pascack Brook at Westwood experienced record flooding. The new peak stage was 11.2 feet. (This was more than a 100-year flood.) The Ramapo River at Mahwah rose to 12.52 ft. at 10 pm on the 16th (a 60-year flood). In Union County: The Rahway River at Springfield was above its' flood stage of 5.5 ft. from 11 am on the 16th until 12:45 pm on the 17th. The crest stage of 10.67 ft. occurred around 10 pm on the 16th. Rainfall Amounts: The axis of heaviest rain was oriented from southwest to northeast and extended from central NJ northeast across Bergen County and the Lower Hudson Valley of Southeast NY. Maximum rainfall rates of 1 to around 2 inches per hour lasted for up to 3 consecutive hours. Here are selected rainfall amounts for: Passaic County: from 7.56 inches at both West Milford and Ringwood to 14.45 inches at Pompton Lakes. Bergen County: from 7.36 inches at Montvale to 10.67 inches at Franklin Lakes. At Teterboro Airport, 8.53 inches of rain was measured. Essex County: from 5.67 inhes at Orange Reservoir to 14.29 inches at Maplewood. At Newark Airport, 6.79 inches was measured. Hudson County: from 6.73 inches at Kearny to 7.67 inches at Harrison. Union County: from 5.95 inches at Elizabeth to 11.90 inches at Union. Winds: Strong and gusty winds combined with torrential rain downed many trees, tree limbs, and power lines across the area. Significant and widespread power outages resulted. The highest measured sustained wind speed and peak gust were 44 mph and 53 mph at Newark Airport from 7 pm to 8 pm on the 16th. |
