Note: This report catalogs recent tropical cyclones across the North Atlantic and East Pacific and places each basin’s tropical cyclone activity in a climate-scale context. It is not updated in real time. Users seeking the real time status and forecasts of tropical cyclones should visit The National Hurricane Center.

Significant Events

Two tropical storms formed in the Atlantic in June, Cristobal and Dolly. Cristobal formed near the Yucatan Peninsula from the remnants of the eastern Pacific's Tropical Storm Amanda. It traveled nearly due north making landfall in southeastern Louisiana. The National Hurricane Center tracked its post-tropical low all the way to Wisconsin making it just the third storm in history to reach the state and the first since 1949. Tropical storm Dolly was a marginal storm off the East Coast that had minimal impacts. However, it marks only the third time on record that four named storms have developed in the Atlantic before the end of June. The other two years were 2012 and 2016. Even though all four storms in 2020 were relatively weak, they still mark a well-above-average start to the Atlantic Hurricane Season.

In contrast, the East Pacific Hurricane Season is off to an unusually quiet start. Tropical Storm Boris was the only named storm, although it was joined by Tropical Depression Four-E. Both tropical storms in 2020 in the East Pacific have been weak, which contributes to the overall lack of activity.
