Subtropical Storm Andrea's formation on May 20 marked the fifth year in a row with named storm before the official start of the Atlantic Hurricane Season on June 1. Subtropical storms are hybrid systems that have characterstics in common with both tropical and extratropical (midlatitude) storms. Like many subtropical storms, Andrea developed from a circulation that broke off the southern end of a cold front. However, it took only 24 hours for it to be re-absorbed back into another front and lose its subtropical characteristics.
