Hurricane Celia Satellite Image |
Hurricane Celia Forecast Track Saffir-Simpson Scale Color Legend |
Celia was the first hurricane of the 2010 East Pacific tropical cyclone season. Celia formed as a tropical low on June 17th and was upgraded to a tropical depression on the 19th. Between the 19th and the 24th, Celia underwent several cycles of strengthening and weakening between tropical storm, Category 1, and Category 2 hurricane. On the 24th Celia strengthened to a Category 5 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 160 mph (260 km/hr) and a minimum central pressure of 936 mb. Celia is only the second Category 5 hurricane ever recorded for the East Pacific Ocean during the month of June. The other June Category 5 Hurricane was Ava in 1973 which also had maximum sustained winds of 160 mph (260 km/hr). After the 25th, Celia slowly weakened to a tropical depression and eventually a remnant low. The National Hurricane issued its last advisory for Celia on the 28th. Celia did not affect any landmass during the lifetime of the storm. More information on Hurricane Celia is available from the NOAA National Hurricane Center.

Tropical Storm Alex Satellite Image |
Tropical Storm Alex Forecast Track |
Hurricane Alex was the first tropical cyclone of the 2010 Atlantic Season. The tropical depression formed on June 25th in the western Caribbean Sea. Alex strengthened to a tropical storm on the 26th and made landfall on the same day in Belize with maximum sustained winds near 60 mph (97 km/hr). Alex moved across the Yucatan Peninsula and weakened to a tropical depression on the 27th. Early on the 28th, Alex re-emerged over water in the Bay of Campeche and re-strengthened to tropical storm status. The storm moved northwestwardly into the Gulf of Mexico and strengthened to a hurricane on the 29th. Alex made landfall on June 30th along the northern Mexican coast near the Texas border as a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph. Hurricane Alex was the strongest June hurricane in the basin since Hurricane Alma in 1966, which had winds of 125 mph (201 km/hr). Alex is also the first June hurricane to form in the Atlantic basin since Hurricane Allison in 1995. More information on Hurricane Alex is available from the NOAA National Hurricane Center.
