Eleven named storms occurred across the globe in February, which was above the 1991-2020 average of seven. One of those reached tropical cyclone strength (≥74 mph), and one reached major tropical cyclone strength (≥111 mph). During February, Northern Hemisphere snow cover extent (SCE) was 43.84 million square km (16.93 million square miles), 4.07% below the 1991-2020 average. For February, 3,809 fires (10th most since 2000) burned 1,403,830 acres (most on record), which is 368.56 acres burned/fire (most). For December - February, 6,689 fires (7th least) burned 1,437,096 acres (most), which is 214.84 acres burned/fire (most). The North American circulation at the beginning of the month was characterized by strong ridging that brought very warm conditions across large swaths of the U.S. Some ridging also returned at the end of the month, which continued to lead to very warm conditions, especially over the eastern half of the U.S. During the middle of the month, a transient trough brought cooler and more dynamic weather conditions across the country. According to data from NOAA's Storm Prediction Center, during February, there were 52 preliminary tornado reports. This is below the 1991-2020 average of 75 tornadoes for the month of February. Approximately 21 percent of the contiguous U.S. (CONUS) was covered by snow at the beginning of February according to NOAA's National Snow Analysis. Overview: GDIS global indicators revealed dry conditions continued during January 2024 across much of South America, Africa, and southern parts of Asia. Beneficial precipitation fell across much of the contiguous United States (CONUS), but much of Canada to the north and Mexico and Central America to the south continued dry. It was wet in Australia, except along the west coast and in some interior areas, and across parts of Europe, except in the north (Scandinavia) and south.
