Warmest Decembers on Record

December 2015 was the warmest December on record for the CONUS. The month was marked with anomalously warm temperatures along the east and stretching well into the Midwest. Daily temperature records were broken throughout the month, but the apex of the warmth occurred around Christmas Day, when some of the new records smashed the previous record by more than 10°F. The image below indicates temperature departures (from the 20th century average) in shades of red. The large image shows December 2015, during which no climate division observed below average temperatures. The bottom four images represent the 2nd through 5th warmest Decembers: 1939, 1957, 2014, and 2006.
