GCOS Ocean Physics ECV - Sea Level

The global mean sea level change provides a measure of the net change in ocean mass due to melting of glaciers and ice sheets, changes in terrestrial water resources, as well as net change in ocean volume due to thermal expansion. 

Product Requirements:

  • Global Mean Sea Level

    • Frequency:  Weekly  to monthly
    • Resolution:  10-100 km
    • Required Measurement uncertainty:  2-4 mm (global mean); 1 cm over a grid mesh
    • Stability (per decade unless otherwise specified:  < 0.3 mm/yr (global mean)

    • Entity (Satellite):  WGClimate
    • Entity (in situ):  JCOMM
  • Regional Sea Level

    • Frequency:  Hourly to weekly
    • Resolution:  10 km
    • Required Measurement uncertainty:  1 cm (over grid mesh of 50-100 km)
    • Stability (per decade unless otherwise specified:  < 1 mm/yr (for grid mesh of 50-100 km)
