| Episode Narrative | Some normal to above normal rainfall fell across the Central Tennessee Valley during October. The first fifteen days of the month were essentially rain-free, except for a few spotty light showers that amounted to a tenth of an inch or less where they did occur. Temperatures, for the most part, stayed well above normal for the first half of the month as well, even hitting 90 in October for the first time since 1998 at Huntsville. Periodic rain began during the second half of the month as the storm track moved southward over the area. The major event of the month was a slow-moving upper low that parked over the area from the 22nd through the 25th, dropping over four inches of rain in the extreme northwest corner of Alabama during the period. October rain amounts ranged from around an inch in Marshall and Jackson counties to more than six inches in extreme western Lauderdale County. The rainfall in extreme northwest Alabama was enough to put a dent in the drought situation there, with even a surplus of rainfall since June 1st, 2007. Further east, the rain was a nice short-term situation but dry conditions quickly reestablished by the end of the month. The Exceptional (D4) drought category was maintained during October for about the eastern half of north Alabama, but improved to the Moderate (D1) category over western portions of Lauderdale, Colbert and Franklin Counties in northwest Alabama. |
