Episode Narrative Even with ENSO neutral conditions rainfall remained below normal over most of South Central Texas and the 2011 Drought continued with little change.
Event Narrative The drought continued over South Central Texas. At the end of the month, the Texas State Climatologist declared the current drought as the most severe one-year drought ever for Texas. Rainfall for July at our four climate sites was 0.05 inches at both Austin Camp Mabry and Bergstrom, 0.96 at San Antonio, and 0.37 at Del Rio. The rainfall deficits for the year are now 9.87 inches at Austin Camp Mabry, 11.79 at Austin Bergstrom, 12.38 at San Antonio, and 8.70 at Del Rio. Most of the area remains in exceptional drought conditions (Stage D4), and lack of rain this month moved DeWitt and Lavaca counties into this stage. Meanwhile there was slight improvement out west where rainfall in Kinney, Maverick, and Val Verde counties lowered them to extreme drought (Stage D3). Isolated thunderstorms during the week of July 19th produced rainfall totals of as much as 2.5 inches in Maverick County and more widespread amounts of near one inch were reported by CoCoRAHS observers in the three counties. Fire danger in South Central Texas increased to moderate to very high and burn bans continued for all of the counties. The Texas A&M agricultural program report indicated the region remained almost completely dry with respect to crops and in wildfire alert status. Many stock tanks were dry and water levels of some wells were low. Ranchers continued to provide supplemental feeding for livestock. At the end of the month the seven day stream flow average remained in the below or much below normal range for basins across South Central Texas and the Rio Grande Plains. Area lakes and reservoirs remain below normal pool elevations with Lake Travis nearly 43 feet below normal. The Edwards Aquifer was 17.5 feet below normal and 27.1 feet below the level from one year ago. The City of Kerrville remained in Stage 3 water restrictions, the San Antonio Water System (SAWS) and City of San Marcos in Stage 2, and the City of Austin in Stage 1. Many other communities across South Central Texas continued with some level of water restrictions.
