| Episode Narrative | By mid-month, drought conditions were classified as severe for parts of western Kentucky. The severe drought classification was south of a line from Murray to Madisonville, including the Hopkinsville area. The rest of western Kentucky was in a moderate drought as determined by the Drought Monitor, a multi-agency effort involving several state and federal organizations. Less than 25 percent of the normal rainfall fell across most of western Kentucky during the first few weeks of June. The hardest hit of those areas was the Pennyrile region (from Madisonville south), where only 5 to 10 percent of normal rainfall occurred. For the year-to-date, some locations in the Pennyrile region were 10 to 14 inches below normal. The Commonwealth of Kentucky issued a Water Shortage Watch for Muhlenberg County, meaning that drinking water supplies could potentially be threatened. Outdoor burning was banned in Muhlenberg County. Dry topsoil resulted in poor crop conditions. Statewide, 61 percent of pastureland and around 25 percent of the corn, soybean, and tobacco crops were rated poor or very poor. Many streams and some of the larger rivers were below their normal flows. Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley were a little over one-half foot below their normal summer pool levels. By the end of the month, several days of scattered thunderstorms brought drought relief. Areas south of a line from Murray to Madisonville were classified as being in a moderate drought. The rest of western Kentucky was removed from the drought classification. Crops benefited greatly from the mid-summer rainfall. |
