Episode Narrative A cold front triggered scattered severe thunderstorms during the evening of May 14 across parts of northeast Iowa. Storm spotters, law enforcement officials and the public reported wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph, which blew down trees and power lines. Strong gradient winds behind the storm system also brought wind gusts between 40 and 50 mph to much of the region.
