| Episode Narrative | For most of South Central Nebraska, the first widespread heavy snow of the season fell between Saturday the 8th and Monday the 10th as an expansive upper level low pressure system centered over the Northern Rockies built increasingly farther into the Central Plains. As it turned out, this ended up being the most significant snow event of the 2010-2011 winter season for nearly the entire area, with most counties reporting between 7-12 inches, and some of the highest totals in this range targeting places such as Hastings, Grand Island and Ord. For Grand Island and Hastings, this event set new records for January 9th calendar day snowfall and and liquid equivalent precipitation. This was a prolonged snow event, with many areas experiencing more than one round over a 36 to 48-hour period. The first round of fairly light accumulations moved in on the afternoon of the 8th into the morning hours on the 9th, with most places reporting no more than 2-4 inches by mid-day on the 9th. Things really picked up during the mid-afternoon hours on the 9th, and lasting through the overnight hours into the 10th. During this time, a nearly stationary area of light to moderate, and occasionally heavy snow fell across nearly all of South Central Nebraska. On the afternoon of the 9th, a stretch of Interstate 80 between Gothenburg and Cozad was closed due to several accidents. By mid-morning on Monday the 10th, light snow or flurries still lingered on across the entire area, but the vast majority of accumulating snow was over. Fortunately, winds were rather light during the period of heaviest snowfall from the 9th into the morning hours on the 10th, with limited impact from blowing and drifting. However, northwesterly winds picked up during the day on the 10th, with gusts of 20-30 mph resulting in minor drifting and locally reduced visibilities. Once the snow ended, bitterly cold air became the story for a few days, with most of the area struggling to reach 10 degrees on both the 11th and 12th. |
| Event Narrative | Snowfall accumulations ranged from 9 to 11 inches across the county. |
