| Episode Narrative | Severe drought expanded across all of western Kentucky during the month of October. A small area of extreme drought developed in a couple of counties near the Mississippi River. Total rainfall for the month was about three-quarters of an inch at Paducah, and between one and 1.5 inches in the Pennyrile region. The monthly total at Paducah was 2.68 inches below normal. The year-to-date rainfall deficit increased to 10.32 inches at Paducah. By month's end, 97 percent of Kentucky topsoil was rated short or very short on moisture, and 98 percent of subsoil was rated as short or very short. Eighty-seven percent of pastureland was rated as poor or very poor, which impacted hay crops. On October 23, a wildfire that started on Fort Campbell in Trigg County burned onto private land, scorching about 90 acres. The fire threatened the community of Roaring Springs, prompting the evacuation of several homes. Local fire departments and the National Guard assisted federal agencies. No homes were burned. Due to high fire danger, bans on outdoor burning were in effect for ten western Kentucky counties at month's end. Crop harvests were completed in October, but final crop damage figures were not yet available. Preliminary estimates from farmers and agricultural extension agents were that corn crop yields would be down 30 to 50 percent in some areas, and soybean yields would be down 50 to 70 percent. Most of western Kentucky was still designated by the state of Kentucky as a drought management area because water supplies were down. A federal disaster declaration was granted for west Kentucky due to substantial agricultural losses due to drought. Dry pastures and diminished stock ponds were problematic for livestock producers. |
