Episode Narrative A strong upper trough in the westerlies moved into southern NM and far west TX on October 9th and produced an atmospheric profile with sufficient vertical wind shear and low/mid level moisture for severe weather. Severe severe cells including at least 4 supercells developed over the area, most of them in southern NM. One supercell tracked from near Animas in Hidalgo County into the Sacramento Mountains northeast of Alamogordo (Otero County), a distance of more than 200 miles.
Event Narrative A large wedge tornado touched down in open country for about 5 minutes from a rapidly moving supercell west-southwest of Deming. Photos of the funnel were widely distributed to area newspapers, and it was readily apparent that the circulation was on the ground. Tornadoes of this size and origin (mesocyclone rather than landspout) are rare in this part of the country.
