|Episode Narrative||After developing about 250 miles north of Pohnpei on September 29th, Tropical Depression 20W was upgraded to Typhoon Melor on October 1st about 550 miles east of Guam. Melor moved west-northwest and intensified further over the next two days, passing just north of Anatahan in the northern Mariana Islands the afternoon and evening of the 3rd with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph. Typhoon Melor brought tropical storm conditions to Saipan and Agrihan during its passage.
On Saipan, Melor's closest approach was 90 miles north of the island at 1900 GST. The maximum sustained wind at the airport was from the west at 36 mph. The time is unknown, but was likely during the late afternoon prior to closest approach. The peak gust of 53 mph was from the west-southwest at 1838 GST. However, reports from the north end of Saipan indicate that winds there were stronger, with sustained winds of 40 to 50 mph with gusts of 60 mph or more likely. the minimum SLP of 995.6 mb was reported at 1854 GST. Rainfall at the airport was 2.53 inches on the 3rd.
At Tinian, winds remained below tropical storm levels, but the automated station recorded 3.25 inches of rain on the 3rd.
Other than a few trees blown over, no damage was reported on Tinian. Saipan reported only minor damage to its power network, with about 500 people losing power during the storm. Power was fully restored by October 6th. No injuries were reported on either island. In addition, no reports concerning injuries or damage were received from Agrihan. Total damage is estimated at $5000.
