Episode Narrative During May, extreme to exceptional drought conditions continued across most of South Texas. There was beneficial rainfall that fell across portions of the Brush Country and Rio Grande Plains, in McMullen, La Salle and Webb counties, as well as in Calhoun county in the Coastal Bend. The rest of the area received below normal rainfall for the month, with most locations around only 50% of normal rainfall for the month of May.

By the end of May, exceptional drought conditions continued across Refugio, Aransas, Bee, San Patricio, Nueces, Kleberg, Live Oak, Jim Wells, and eastern Duval counties. Extreme drought conditions were observed across Victoria, Goliad, Calhoun, and western Duval counties. Severe drought conditions were observed across most La Salle, Webb, and most of McMullen counties. (per the U.S. Drought Monitor: http://www.drought.unl.edu/dm/monitor.html)

The agriculture industry in South Texas continued to be devastated through the month of May. Crops remained in very poor condition, and insurance companies were adjusting and paying farmers. Supplemental feeding of livestock with hay continued, although isolated locations of rangeland were greening up slightly with rainfall during the month.

Periods of elevated to critical fire danger occurred through the month with sporadic wildfires observed, however generally smaller than the larger fires observed earlier in the Spring.

In addition, reservoir levels continued a gradual fall. Choke Canyon Reservoir was near 76% capacity and Lake Corpus Christi near 49% capacity by the end of the month.
