| Episode Narrative | After being hit by heavy snow December 18 and 19, southeast Minnesota was impacted by another winter storm December 20 through 21. Highest snowfall amounts were generally 4 to 7 inches, with specific reports of 7.6 inches at Preston (Fillmore County), 7.0 inches near Rochester International Airport (Olmsted County) and 6.3 inches at Grand Meadow (Mower County). Northwest winds gusting to 30 to 40 mph in the wake of an arctic cold front produced near white-out conditions, along with 2 to 4 foot drifts. In addition to the wind and snow, sharply falling temperatures resulted in bitterly cold wind chills of 20 below to 40 below, which lingered into December 22. Due to several in a series of snow-producing systems, December 2008 would turn out to be the third snowiest December on record in Rochester, with a total of 28.6 inches. The all-time December snowfall record in Rochester remained at 35.3 inches, which was established in 2000. |
