Northeast Pacific Basin
According to the National Hurricane Center, on average (1966-96) there are approximately six named systems (four tropical storms and two hurricanes) to form in the Eastern Pacific by August 1st. For the year-to-date period, there have been five named storms to form which is below the long-term averages of six tropical storms and three hurricanes. |

The Eastern Pacific hurricane season officially began on May 15th; however, the first tropical cyclone (Tropical Depression One-E) did not form until June 18th. It was the first time in 10 years that no activity occurred in May. Atmospheric conditions did not allow One-E to fully organize. It made landfall on June 20th, causing widespread flooding in the city streets of Mazatlan in Mexico. The first named Eastern Pacific storm for the 2009 season was Hurricane Andres. Andres developed on June 21st, making 2009 the second least active start of the Eastern Pacific hurricane season (1994 was the least active). Andres traversed the western Mexican coastline through June 24th, at which time strong upper level shear rapidly weakened the storm. Andres caused one death and displaced approximately 200 people. |
