January temperature magnitudes

Large temperature swings in the contiguous U.S. can be a result of the jet stream fluctuating from the north to the south or vice versa. When the jet stream is positioned to the north, a southerly flow allows warmer air to seep in from the south. When the jet stream is positioned to the south, it allows cooler air to dive in from the Arctic. The change in the jet stream pattern can result in large temperature swings on a daily and monthly scale. One way to depict these temperature swings is measuring the difference between the monthly maximum high and monthly minimum low for a single station. Below are select cities across the U.S. depicting monthly temperature swings dating back to 1950. The vertical grey bars show the maximum high temperature (top) and the minimum low temperature (bottom) for the month. The difference between the two is shows as the horizontal black line.
