Content in capital letters will be implementated in next version
The following variable search terms are organized in two ways: 1) by the category of proxy/archive, or climate reconstruction, they represent; and 2) in a hierarchical order of increasing specificity within each of these categories. The highest hierarchical level involved with a particular variable term is indicated by the number at the left of the search term string (third order is the highest currently implemented).
These search terms provide a very flexible search capability. For example, copying the search string ice core >atmospheric gas>carbon dioxide concentration (parts per million by volume) into the "Search All Paleoclimatology" search box, replacing ">" by the logical operator AND (with a space added before and after the operator), and hitting the "Perform Search" button will provide a result with all records that measure atmospheric CO2 concentrations derived from ice core archives. Similarly, a search using corals and sclerosponges AND oxygen isotopes will provide a result with all records that measure oxygen isotopes derived from corals and sclerosponges. More generally, a search on just the higher-order term oxygen isotopes will provide all records that measure oxygen isotopes from any proxy/archive system in the NCDC/Paleoclimate database.
