Paleo Slide Set: Heinrich Events: Marine Record of Abrupt Climate Changes in the Late Pleistocene
Scientists examining a seismic profile.
After information about the sediments at the bottom of the ocean is collected by the "deep-tow fish" instrument and transmitted to the ship, ship-board scientists study the nature of the seafloor and underlying sediments. The print-out these scientists are examining is a seismic profile of the surface of the sea floor and the thickness of the underlying sediment layers. This profile will aid greatly in selecting coring locations that have promise to yield accurate and detailed records of the region's climatic history.
