Are these coral structures of varying colors, textures and sizes alive? They are, but the only parts that are actually living are the top several millimeters, called polyps. The remaining coral is just a skeleton.

The coral reef is a habitat for many organisms. What makes the coral reef a good habitat for so many sea creatures?
