To retrieve sediment cores from both lakes, two different coring systems were used. For the top most sediments that are water-saturated and oozy, a mud-water interface corer, consisting of a
clear polycarbonate tube (125 cm by 7 cm) was used. Deeper sections of the core that occur past the mud-water interface are retrieved in 1 meter intervals using a square-rod piston corer
