Figure 2. Comparison of high-resolution paleoclimate records from Cariaco Basin and GISP2 Greenland ice core. Upper (blue) curve is Cariaco Basin grey scale. Vertical (light blue) bars drawn from grey scale record indicate timing and durations of paleoclimate event transitions and delineate the boundaries between Preboreal (PB), Younger Dryas (YD), and Bølling/Allerød (B/A) climatic events. Width of bars indicates duration of these transitions based on Cariaco Basin grey scale and varve chronology. Center (purple) curve is GISP2 annual ice accumulation. Dashed (red) lines from GISP2 to Cariaco Basin record indicate major climatic events used to constrain correlation of the two records. This correlation was used to quantitatively compare the two independent chronologies. Lower (red) curve shows the age difference as a function of time. The chronologies mostly agree within 20 years, and only differ by as much as 100 years toward the beginning of deglaciation.
