Geochronology

An important factor in any environmental synthesis excercise is geochronology. In this Atlas, we take great care in assessing our chronologies. This assessment is done at two levels. The first level is done by the researchers who are submitting their data to the Atlas. It is their duty to provide the project with a well dated record. Once the submitting researcher has contributed their data, we apply a scheme to assess how well a site's chronology defines the specific time slices used in the Atlas.

We also feel that it is important to present our data in calibrated years BP. We have completed a calibration of our radiocarbon ages and are in the process of generating new maps using calibrated age schemes. Look for the updates soon.

Terminology: Terms and conventions related to geochronology
used in the Atlas.

Radiocarbon Calibration: Available winter 1998 - 1999.

criteria; site chronology assessments.
