Svalbard Ice Core Data

Download Data via FTP: Svalbard Ice Core Data
There are three data sets available from two ice cores drilled at Svalbard. Ice coring in this region was conducted between 1975 and 1987 by the Soviet Acadamy of Sciences, Institute of Geography. Please read the README file from A Tarusov submitted with the original data.
Austfonna 1987 Ice Core Accumulation Data The borehole was drilled by V. Zagorodnov at the summit of the Austfonna (East Ice) at North-East Land in July 1987. The bedrock was reached at 566.7 m. The lowermost 60 meters of ice core consists of 100% infiltration ice. The borehole location is 79 deg. 51 min. N., 24 deg. 08 min. E. The surface elevation is 750 m a.s.l. with an annual mean air temperature of -11 C. The 10 meter ice temperature is -3.4 C.
Austfonna 1987 Ice Core Chemical Data This file contains data on the chemical composition of the ice samples from the Austfonna ice core (1987). It was drilled by V. Zagorodnov and processed by S. Arkhipov (both from the Institute of Geography, Soviet Academy of Sciences).
Lomonosovfonna 1982 Ice Core Data This file contains the annual layer thicknesses measured in Lomonosovfonna ice core (Westspitsbergen) in 1982. The borehole was drilled by V. Zagorodnov and reached bedrock at 135 m. Annual layers were determined by the stratigraphic method and all thicknesses are in centimeters of ice equivelant (0.90 g/cc). The borehole location is 78 deg. 44 min. N, 17 deg. 34 min. E. The surface elevation is 1020 m a.s.l. with an annual mean air temperature of -12.5 C.
