Dronning Maud Land Ions Data Description

Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica (Location--2°00'E, 75°00'S, Elevation--2,900 m a.s.l.)
One core drilled austral summer 1991-1992; 20 meters
DATA SET AVAILABLE: Core: Chemistry (Na, Mg, Ca, Cl, NO3, SO4, MSA)
The core was drilled by the Swedish Antarctic Research Program using a PICO light-weight corer. All field core processing was done by the Swedish field party. The core was shipped frozen to Sweden and later to the Glacier Research Group faciltiy at the University of New Hampshire, Durham, New Hampshire. There the core was processed into 3 centimeter pieces by the Glacier Research Group using established protocals to prevent contamination. The 3 cm pieces were kept frozen until major ion analysis.
Analytical methods: Major ion analysis was by ion chromatography. The anions were analyzed on a Dionex AS4A column; the cations on a Dionex CS12 column and MSA on a Dionex AS4 column. All used suppressed chromatography.

Data Fields -999 indicates no data -888 indicates sample below the level of detection Precision is the average of the coefficient of variations calculated for each pair of duplicate aliquots analyzed.
Data Set: dronning.dat Top depth, meters; Bottom depth, meters; Sodium (Na), micrograms/liter; precision 2% Magnesium (Mg), micrograms/L; precision 5% Calcium (Ca), micrograms/L; precision 8% Chloride (Cl), micrograms/L; precision 2% Nitrate (NO3), micrograms/L; precision 2% Sulfate (SO4), micrograms/L; precision 2% MSA (methanesulfonate), micrograms/L; precison 10%
General comments on the core chemistry data: There is no potassium data as potassium coeluded with another, unidentified compound. The unidentified species is some gas phase compound picked up during transportation, perhaps from the core bags or the insulation in the shipping boxes. The absence of potassium data complicated determining which samples might be contaminated by handling.
