About the Meeting Site:
The CAPE 2000 meeting will be held in Kirkjubaejarklaustur, a pleasant village of 150 inhabitants located on the southern coast of Iceland, about 3 hours' drive from Reykjavik. Iceland was selected as the venue for this meeting for its central North Atlantic position near the margin of the seasonal sea ice limit, and for the exceptional record of historical variations in sea ice extent over the past millennium. The village of Kirkjubaejarklaustur is close to the glacier Vatnajøkull where a subglacial volcanic eruption in 1996 led to a subsequent jökulhlaup. There are many other scenic places, both on the way from Reykjavik and in the area surrounding Kirkjubaejarklaustur. In addition, there will be a range of cultural activities scheduled in Reykjavik, since it is one of Europe's cultural cities for the year 2000.
We have booked 58 hotel rooms in Kirkjubaejarklaustur for the period 2-6 June 2000. The hotel has a meeting room, space for posters, and smaller break-out rooms. Travel to and from Reykjavik will be by chartered bus through places of historical and geological interest(interpreter provided).
The weather in June, as is often the case, is unpredictable. Temperatures typically vary between 5 and 15 °C; some rain is likely. If you wish to partake in the outdoor activities that are being organized, you should bring sturdy wet-weather shoes and warm rain gear. It will be light about 20 hours per day.
