    FTP to thunder.ias.sdmt.edu
    CHANGE DIRECTORIES TO pub/dos/IRAS

** This directory contains the files necessary to run the Interactive Radar Analysis Software (IRAS) on a 80286 or 80386 based PC running MS-DOS 3.1 or higher. You must have at least EGA display capability. It is highly recommended that you have a math coprocessor although IRAS should function without one (much slower).

The following files are required by IRAS:

      IRAS.EXE

This is the main program. It requires slightly less than 500Kb of memory to run. You may have to free up some memory before running it. Use the DOS "mem" command to see how much free memory you have.

      IRAS.CLR

This file contains all of the various color tables used by IRAS. This file can be modified (using IRAS) by the user (add, modify or delete).

      IRAS.TXT

This file contains various IRAS control information. Although it is a text file which can be edited with any text editor, it is strongly recommended that all changes be made through the IRAS Configuration Table edit function. The main reason is that IRAS used formatted reads to input the data from this table. As such, any unexpected change in the table format will probably cause an error.

      "file.lst"

The PC version of IRAS requires a special text file called the "IRAS Volume Scan Files List". The name of this file (along with an appropriate pathname) must appear in the appropriate part of the IRAS Volume Scan Files List. The names of any radar data files which are to be analyzed by IRAS must be entered into this file. One usually uses a text editor to create/modify this file (or use the UNIX ls command and pipe the output to a file).

Some sample data files have been included in the ftp directory. The file "july1789.cp4" is a sample IRAS Volume Scan Files List. It contains the name of the sample data file dz140925.dat). Also included is a flight track data file (july1789.t28) and lightning data file july1789.zap.

NOTE ** IRAS assumes that the DOS menu is off. If the mouse doesn't work properly when in an IRAS session, exit and issue the following command: "menu off".

If you have any questions or run into any problems, send e-mail to dave@nimbus.ias.sdsmt.edu or call me at (605)-394-1993.

    FTP to thunder.ias.sdmt.edu
    CHANGE DIRECTORIES TO pub/Motif-IRAS

Motif-IRAS is a software package which can be used to display and analyze weather radar data. The following radar data formats are supported: IRAS, Universal, and WSR-88D Archive II. It is available free of charge, but with no guarantees, via anonymous ftp from thunder.ias.sdsmt.edu. To get the software do the following:

    % ftp thunder.ias.sdsmt.edu

         Username: ftp or anonymous
         Password: your email address

    > cd pub/Motif-IRAS

Set to binary mode as follows:

    > binary

For HP/9000 users do the following:

    > get Motif-IRAS.hp9000.tar.Z

For IBM RS6000 users use the following:

    > get Motif-IRAS.rs6000.tar.Z

For Sun SPARCstation users (Solaris 2.x) use the
          following:

    > get Motif-IRAS.sun4.tar.Z

Users with none of the above mentioned system types
will have to get one of the files and do a complete
build. In most instances you will probably need
to modify the Makefile (library paths, compiler
    options, flags, etc).

In addition to the software it is recommended that
you also get the sample data archive as follows:

    > get data.tar.Z

    Exit as follows:

    > quit

The software archive can be uncompressed as follows:

    % zcat Motif-IRAS..Z | tar xvpf -

The archive will explode from the current working
directory, with all files containined in the tree
    "./motif_iras". The executable "motif_iras" can
be found in the "./motif_iras/src" directory along
with source and object files. If you do not need
to rebuild IRAS, it is recommended that you copy
the executable to a common place for binaries such
as "/usr/local/bin". Of course this directory
    should be in your path.

All IRAS users should have a copy of the resource
file ".iras-init" in their home directory. It
can be found in "./motif_iras". To copy it to
your home directory do the following:

    % cp ./motif_iras/.iras-init $HOME

This file is used by IRAS to initialize a number
of global variables. These include: default data
directory pathnames, default color table, window
sizes, etc. A description of each entry is given
    in the file.

Although no warrantee is given to the software, it
would be appreciated that any bugs, comments,
suggestions be reported to the following individual:
    dave@thunder.ias.sdsmt.edu.

At the present time there is no format version
number given to IRAS. Hopefully this will change in
the not to distant future to better track problems.
In the meantime, you can find out if any changes
were made by logging into thunder.ias.sdsmt.edu
(using anon ftp), going to the /pub/Motif-IRAS
directory, doing a "dir" and checking the dates.
