World Data Center for Meteorology, Asheville

Global analyses of monthly precipitation derived from satellite and surface measurements.

Introduction

World Data Center A (WDC) for Meteorology, Asheville is one component of a global network of discipline subcenters that facilitate international exchange of scientific data. Originally established during the International Geophysical Year (IGY) of 1957, the World Data Center System now functions under the guidance of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU).

The WDC for Meteorology, Asheville is maintained by the U.S. Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and is collocated and operated by the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC).

In accordance with the principles set forth by ICSU, WDC for Meteorology, Asheville acquires, catalogues, and archives data and makes them available to requesters in the international scientific community. Data are exchanged with counterparts, WDC for Meteorology, Obninsk and WDC for Meteorology, Beijing as necessary to improve access. Special research data sets prepared under international programs such as the IGY, World Climate Program (WCP), Global Atmospheric Research Program (GARP), etc., are archived and made available to the research community. All data and special data sets contributed to the WDC are available to scientific investigators without restriction.

1 Degree Daily (1DD) Precipitation Estimate, Version 1.1

The GPCP One -Degree Daily (1DD) RELEASED AS AN OFFICIAL GPCP PRODUCT, July 13, 2009

The GPCP One-Degree Daily Precipitation Data Set (1DD Data Set) provides daily, global 1x1-deg gridded fields of precipitation totals for October 1996 through the delayed present. The 1DD draws upon several different data sources covering different areas of the globe. Every attempt has been made to make the complete record homogeneous, given the different available input sources.

Please read the 1DD documentation for complete information.

Version 2.1

We are proud to announce the release of Version 2.1 (V2.1) of the GPCP monthly product and Version 1.1 (V1.1) of the GPCP One-Degree Daily (1DD) product. The entire data record for both products has been recomputed and therefore all data must be pulled. The GPCP V2.1 product span is currently January 1979 through the delayed present and the 1DD V1.1 product span is October 1996 through the delayed present. Since no single satellite data source spans the entire data record, the product draws upon many different sources covering different times and regions within the data record. Every attempt has been made to make the complete record homogeneous, given the different available input sources.

Please read the Version 2.1 documentation for complete information.

Pentad Data

Experimental GPCP Pentad (5-Day) Precipitation Analysis

An analysis of global pentad (5-day) precipitation has been constructed for the Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP). It is created on a 2.5 degree latitude/longitude grid and covers a period from 1979 to near current time. This pentad analysis is a companion to the version 2 product of the GPCP global monthly precipitation analysis. Users are recommended to utilize the GPCP monthly analysis for applications of monthly and longer time scales and use this pentad data set only for studies where sub-monthly and intra-seasonal phenomena are involved.
Please read the Pentad documentation for complete information.
