Question

Can AREA files be used within GIS?

Answer: Yes

Java tool

NCDC has developed a Java tool which can be used to read GOES McIDAS Area files from CLASS and output to numerous formats (GeoTIFF, Gridded NetCDF, ESRI ASCII Grid, etc.) compatible with GIS-software. The tool will be available in June 2008.

Fortran tool

NCDC has also developed a Fortran program to read McIDAS Area files received from CLASS and convert them to GIS-compatible ASCII files. Please contact NCDC.Satorder@noaa.gov to request the code. [Note: The Fortran code was developed on a Linux system using the Lahey/Fujitsu Fortran95 compiler (lf95)].
