Houston Nexrad Site (KHGX) June 9-11, 2000 Flash Flooding

Java-IRAS is a platform independent software application written by David Priegnitz under grant funding received by the ESDIM Program (Environmental Services Data and Information Management Program). The Java-IRAS development is part of the activity surrounding the Collaborative Radar Acquisition Field Test (CRAFT) Project to deliver high-resolution WSR-88D Level II (base) radar data via the Internet in realtime. The software application allows users to read and display realtime and archived Level II radar data on platforms supporting Java (version 1.3 and higher).

• PPI displays of selected elevation cuts
• CAPPI displays at selected heights
• RHI displays at selected azimuths
• Auto-update of selected or all elevation cuts when new data are available
• Basic looping of PPI or CAPPI displays (up to 20 frames)
• High resolution map overlays (NOTE: map files must be created for individual sites. MapMaker tool distributed with Java-IRAS to create maps from master USGS DLV file )
• Standard WSR-88D color tables based on VCP
• Zoom and recenter capability for PPI and CAPPI displays

David Priegnitz is an employee of the Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies (CIMMS) working at the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL). Java-IRAS is the latest version of the original IRAS application written by Mr Priegnitz in 1990 while employed at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. The CRAFT grant was awarded to the National Severe Storms Laboratory in collaboration with the National Climatic Data Center, the National Weather Service Radar Operations Center, and the University of Oklahoma. The software may be downloaded, used, and freely distributed with appropriate credit given to ESDIM, CIMMS, and NSSL.

Right click on IRAS and "save target as" to download Java-IRAS. See the ReadMe file for installation instructions.

Level2Dump is a Java-based tool to dump selected header and/or radial data from NEXRAD Level 2 format records. By default all output is to standard output. However, if an output file is selected from the Output File menu, then output is directed to a file instead.

Right click on Level2Dump and "save target as" to download Level2Dump. See the ReadMe file for installation instructions.

For Sample Data(Compressed), Click on one of these sample files, and then "Save target as" to download to your local hard Drive. Then Uncompress before loading into IRAS.
