This revision of the NOAA-KLM User's Guide contains preliminary descriptions of the NOAA Level 1b format for the NOAA-N and P instrument data. NOAA's October 2004 update to this format is not incorporated in this guide. NOAA also announced the intent to use the new NOAA Level 1b format for data processed from the NOAA-15, 16 and 17 instruments beginning in early 2005. There is no plan at this time to reprocess archived data into the new format.
While this guide is being updated with this new information, users are referred to the ftp site at ftp://metroweb.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/noaa-n/ for the latest information on the new format. This site contains directories for AMSU-A, AMSU-B, AVHRR, HIRS and MHS instruments. Each of these directories contains two Microsoft Word documents; one describing the new NOAA Level 1b format and the other describing differences between the previous and new data format. The directory also contains a sample dataset in the new format for software testing purposes. The online NOAA KLM User’s Guide will be updated with this information as soon as possible.
A history of NOAA Level 1b Notices is posted at http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/PSB/PPP/notices/notices.html. If you wish to receive future operational notices for users by e-mail, please e-mail your request to: Cecil.Paris@noaa.gov
