KAVIENG (ARM/PROBE) - NARROW-FIELD-OF-VIEW RADIOMETER DATA

M. Platt (CSIRO, AUSTRALIA)

Status: Not released.

Data Access

Information about the availability of the Narrow-field-of-view Radiometer data can be obtained from Martin Platt at CSIRO, Australia (cmp@larry.dar.csiro.au).

These data, together with other PROBE and COARE cloud and radiation data, will be archived and distributed in "original" and netCDF format, and illustrated in Compuserve's GIF file format by the Pennsylvania State University Department of Meteorology Field Project Data Archive under the direction of Tom Ackerman. The URL for Penn State is http://wwwarc.essc.psu.edu.

The National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) (http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/coare) has responsibility for distributing information about TOGA COARE datasets and access paths.

Background

The Pilot Radiation Observation Experiment (PROBE) was a pilot study for the Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program, a long-term scientific effort to improve the treatment of cloud radiative forcing and feedback processes in global climate models.

PROBE enhanced the radiation measurement component of COARE and provided ground truth for the aircraft missions. PROBE researchers collected data on clouds and radiation with ground-based instruments and aircraft. A radiative measurement and cloud-imaging station was installed at Kavieng, Papua New Guinea in the western part of the COARE experimental area. The surface measurements included direct measurements of radiative flux and vertical profiles of wind, temperature and water vapor remote sensing of cloud geometry, particle size distribution and other cloud parameters. Instrumented research aircraft flying over the surrounding region measured up- and downwelling radiative flux above and below cirrus anvils.
