D. Jaynes (NASA/AMES, USA)

Announced availability: 1 June 1993

Data Access

This document includes the NASA DC-8 Mission Summary that was distributed by NASA/Ames in March 1993 after successful completion of the TOGA COARE field experiment.

Background

The NASA DC-8 conducted 20 flights in support of TOGA COARE during January and February 1993, for a total of 138.9 flight hours. On each flight, the DADS system recorded the aircraft parameters which are available from the NASA Goddard Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC).

NASA DC-8 Aircraft Mission Summary

Flight Flight Date Type of Summary
ID Hours Flight
930101 4.7 12/16/92 Ch #1 Flew off Oregon coast. Valero and Hallett not on aircraft. Intermit. on left wing probe.

930103 2 12/30/92 Ch #3 Right wingtip pod installed. No problems with left or right pod. Used stinger to calibrate LIP.
930104 5.4 1/4/93 Transit Problem with LN2 dewar valve for Valero. Used stinger to calibrate LIP. Transit Ames to Hawaii.
930105 9.4 1/5/93 Transit Stinger calibrations done. Dropsonde tested. Transit Hawaii to Townsville.
930106 7 1/11/93 Radiation Radiation flight. FLs flown were 270, 200, 390.
930107 7.9 1/17/93 Convection Convective flight with ER-2, NOAA P3s, UK C-130, Electra and Cessna. Flight tracks flown at FL 300, 200, 390, and 100 (for LIP).
930108 7.7 1/19/93 Convection Sun entered #8 port of Lidar causing some problem. FLs were 330, 250-280, 390, 310. Much rain in the IFA.
930109 7.6 1/25/93 Radiation Flew over Kavieng. FLs flown were 270, 370, 390 and 330.
930110 7.7 2/1/93 Radiation 2u Lidar beam working. FLs flown were 270, 210, 330, 390. Visual lightning discharge sited.
930111 8 2/4/93 Convection Much moisture in aircraft. Lidar windows burned. FLs flown were 330, 360, 250, 390. Had cabin altitude pressure problems (reached 11,000'). No P3s.
930112 7.4 2/6/93 Convection Flew with P3s and Electra. Had pressurization problems, but inside of aircraft was drier than previous flight. FLs flown were 330, 390, 290, 360. Flew across tropical storm Oliver. Replaced one Lidar window with spare.
930113 6.3 2/8/93 Convection Flew over Oliver with ER-2. FLs flown were 100, 300, 350, 280, 240, 050. Had rain/ice damage.
930114 8 2/10/93 Convection Flew with P3s, ER-2, and Electra. FLs flown were 330, 270, 350, 390.
930115 7.6 2/17/93 Convection Flew with one P3 and Electra. Replacement up/down lidar windows now installed. FLs flown were 370, 390, 360, 330. Passed through anvil.
930116 8 2/20/93 Convection Flew with ER-2 and P3s. Did vertical profile above descending dropsonde. Did AMMR cals. FLs flown were 330, 360, 300, 410.
930117 7.4 2/22/93 Convection Flew with ER-2 and P3s. Had to depart test area early because of pressurization problems. Did calibration turns for LIP and airspeed changes at FL 280 and 100 to calibrate Rosemount sensor.
930118 7.7 2/23/93 Radiation Flew with ER-2 over Kavieng. Did LIP pitch/roll calibrations. Vibrations in AMMS cooling probe were observed. Did circular descent with dropsonde probe.
930119 9.1 2/26/93 Transit Transit Townsville to Hawaii.
930120 4.7 2/28/93 Transit Transit Hawaii to Ames.
Total Hours 138.9 Notes: Differences in flight days may be seen among the PIs. It is NASA/Ames' custom to log the flight day as the GMT day at takeoff.
