Some highlights for the month from the Midwest U.S. courtesy of Steve Hilberg at the University of Illinois. Based on preliminary data, June 2003 was the 23rd coolest in the Midwest. The early part of the month saw 40F readings and a number of record low temperatures established, including 27F in Rhinelander, WI on June 1. St. Louis, MO set a new June record for precipitation with 12.35 inches. The old record was 10.84 inches in 1875. The St. Louis metro areas was also hard hit by severe weather again this month. An MCS on June 10 knocked out power to more than 110,000 homes and businesses and downed many trees. One location in central Minnesota reported almost 10 inches of rain for the month.
