This month was drier than normal, statewide, ranking as the 20th driest September in the 108-year record. However, long-term conditions have been wet, with the hydrologic year (October-September) coming in at eleventh wettest.
As noted by the Illinois state climatologist's office (Dr. Jim Angel),
- above average precipitation fell across parts of southern Illinois in September; however, most of the state received below average rainfall
- as a result, soil moisture conditions in the state at the end of September varied greatly from north to south and with depth (Figure 1 in the report)
- overall, soil moisture in Illinois at the end of the month was below normal (Figure 2 in the report)
