Welcomed rains this month gave Georgia a statewide precipitation rank of 15th wettest September in the 108-year record. However, long-term dryness has resulted in the tenth driest hydrologic year (October-September). This year marks the fourth consecutive hydrologic year with below-average statewide precipitation.
Beneficial rains in mid-September from the remnants of Tropical Storm Hanna improved short-term drought conditions across much of Georgia. As noted by the National Weather Service, this applies to reducing fire danger and helping grass, shrubs, small trees and other shallow rooted vegetation. However, there was very little impact on the long-term drought, as rainfall deficits over the last several years have been so large that it will take a lot more rain to eliminate the drought (NWS). Outdoor watering restrictions remained in effect across much of the state.
