Climate of 2002 - June South Region
Drought National Climatic Data Center, 15 July 2002
June was dry across parts of the South Region, primarily primarily from western Kansas to western Texas. Other areas were wet, resulting in a slightly drier than normal month regionwide. Long-term conditions, as measured by the Palmer Hydrological Drought Index, indicate severe drought at the end of June across western Kansas, western Oklahoma, deep south Texas, and the Trans-Pecos region of west Texas. According to the USDA, by early July the pasture and range land was rated in the poor to very poor category for: 45% of Kansas and 40% of Texas, but only 7% of Oklahoma.
