June 2002 marked the seventh consecutive month with below-normal precipitation averaged across South Dakota. The persistent dryness resulted in the third driest December-June on record. The dry spell, which began last winter, ended a very wet period, which can be seen quite well in the statewide long-term Palmer Hydrological Drought Index. However, the drought intensified during the early stages of this year's growing season. The status of the state's pasture and range land rapidly increased to 69% rated by the USDA in the poor to very poor category by early July.
According to the USDA-NWS Joint Agricultural Weather Facility (JAWF), a record-setting heat wave capped the driest June on record
in Rapid City, SD. Precipitation totaled 0.42 inch (11 mm) (15% of normal), eclipsing the June 1898 record of 0.50 inch (13 mm). Rapid City closed the month with 10 consecutive high temperatures of 90 degrees F (32.2 C) or higher, second only to 14 such June days in 1988.
