Climate of 2002 - July Georgia
Drought National Climatic Data Center, 15 August 2002
|
|
July 2002 marked the fourth consecutive month with below normal rainfall, statewide, for Georgia, and ranked as the 36th driest July in the 108-year record. The persistent dryness for the last 12 months gave 2002 a rank of driest August-July on record. Impacts from the drought include:
- 5,828 wildfires have scorched 154,870 acres through July 31 (according to the National Interagency Fire Center).
- 47% of the state's topsoil was rated as very dry ("short to very short") by the USDA as of July 28.
- According to the Georgia State Climatologist (Dr. David Stooksbury),
- wells in south central Georgia are drying up at an alarming rate,
- public health is becoming a concern with low well levels, and health departments are encouraging private well owners to boil their drinking water in the southern half of the state because of low well levels.
