Climate of 2002 - August
Illinois Drought

National Climatic Data Center, 13 September 2002

As noted by the Illinois state climatologist's office (Dr. Jim Angel),

statewide precipitation averaged slightly above normal for the month of August
soil moisture conditions at the end of the month were generally below normal across southern Illinois and above normal across the northern sections
soil moisture conditions, integrated across the state, were slightly above normal by the end of August
