August was drier than normal when rainfall is averaged across the state, ranking as the 40th driest August in the 108-year record. But conditions varied considerably across the state. According to the National Weather Service, Athens had the second driest August and Atlanta the third driest August on record in 2002.
The persistent long-term dryness has resulted in the 25th driest summer (June-August) and second driest September-August statewide (see table below). According to a National Weather Service-USDA analysis, Atlanta had its driest 3-year, calendar-year period on record (1999-2001) and is now headed toward its driest 4-year period.
