This preliminary map shows thematically which areas of the world were warmer than average and which were cooler during 1997. The open (or blue) dots show cool anomalies, and the closed (or red) show warm anomalies. The size of the dot is proportional to the magnitude of the anomaly. The NOAA NCEP Reynolds blended satellite-ship-buoy analyses were used, with an averaging period of 1982-1997. In locations where both land and ocean data were available, the most representative data set was used.
