Top of the Page Temperature / Dewpoint

1. The temperature at La Crosse, WI finally fell below zero on March 3rd, 2001. This was the latest date for the first sub zero reading. The previous earliest date was on February 2, 1891. Also, the last time it was below zero was back on February 28, 2001 this is a streak of 368 days which is a new record for longest stretch without a sub zero reading in La Crosse. The old record was 348 days in 1932.

2. The temperature at Chanute, KS fell to 0 on March 3, 2002. This broke the daily record of 1 degrees set in 1960 and was also a new all time record low for the month of March. The last time the temperature fell below zero was on January 3rd, 2001.

3. The temperature at Chanute, KS fell to 3 below zero on Monday March 4th, 2002. This broke the daily record of 2 degrees set in 1960 and was also a new all time record low for the month of March. The last time the temperature fell below zero was on January 3rd, 2001.

4. The temperature at Monroe, LA fell to 18 degrees on March 4th, 2002. This ties the previous record low temperature for March set on March 9th, 1996.

5. The temperature at Longview, TX fell to 17 degrees on March 4th, 2002. This ties the previous record low temperature for March set on March 12, 1948 and March 2nd, 1980.

6. The low temperature at Houston, TX was 22 degrees on March 4, 2002. This broke the daily record of 25 degrees set in 1971 and also ties the record low for the month of March which was last set on March 2nd, 1980.

7. The low temperature at College Station, TX was 17 degrees on March 4, 2002. This broke the daily record of 24 degrees set in 1965 and also ties the record low for the month of March which was last set on March 3, 1943.

8. The low temperature at San Antonio, TX was 19 degrees on March 4, 2002. This broke the daily record of 23 degrees set in 1965 and also ties the record low for the month of March which was last set on March 2, 1980.

9. The low temperature at Austin-Bergstrom, TX was 17 degrees on March 4, 2002. This broke the daily record of 25 degrees set in 1971 and also is a new record for March. The old March record was 19 degrees set in 1980, 1943 and 1948.

10. The low temperature at Fayetteville, AR was 1 degrees on March 3, 2002. This broke the daily record of 9 degrees set in 1960 and also is a new record for March. The old March record was 7 degree set on March 2, 1980

11. The low temperature at Fayetteville, AR was 0 degrees on March 4, 2002. This broke the daily record of 8 degrees set in 1960 and also is a new record for March. The old March record was 1 degree set on March 3, 2002

12. The low temperature at McAlester, OK was 6 degrees on March 3, 2002. This broke the daily record of 11 degrees set in 1960 and also is a new record low for March. The old record was 9 degrees set on March 2, 1980.

13. The low temperature at McAlester, OK was 6 degrees on March 4, 2002. This broke the daily record of 13 degrees set in 1971 and also ties the record low for March which was last set just yesterday on March 3, 2002

14. The low temperature at Victoria, TX was 21 degrees on March 4, 2002. This broke the daily record of 29 and also tied the all time record low for March set on the 2nd in 1980.

15. The low temperature at North Platte, NE was - 22 degrees on March 4, 2002. This ties the previous daily and monthly record low for March. The previous -22 degree reading occurred back in 1960.

16. March 2002 has been a cold one in Great Falls, MT. As of March 25th, 12 days had lows below zero which is a new record for the month. The old record was 10 days in 1912. Also, 16 days of the month had high temperatures below freezing which is a new record. The old record was 15 days set in 1965 and 1951.

17. The winter of 2001-2002 will most likely tie the winter of 1997- 1998 at La Crosse, WI for the least number of sub zero temperatures during a winter season. So far this season, only two sub-zero readings were recorded - both in March 2002.


Top of the Page Rainfall

1. March 2002 was wet across North Texas. The Dallas-Ft. Worth Intl AP, TX received 7.39 inches of rain for the month of March 2002. This broke the old monthly March record of 6.69 inches set in 1965. The station also set two daily rainfall records for the month as well. The total rainfall for the year through March 2002 is 13.23 inches which is 5.90 inches above normal.

2. In southwest California, the December 2001- March 2002 was the driest or second driest on record. It was the driest three month winter period at San Deigo (Lindbergh Field) with only 1.40 inches of rain. The old record was 1.90 inches set back in 1899-1900. It was also the driest three month period at Cuyamaca, CA with 5.29 inches of rain versus the second driest of 7.69 set in 1998-1999. Palm Springs, CA was also the driest with only 0.31 inches of rain in the Dec 2001-March 2002 period. The old record was 0.39 inches set in 1998-1999. Some of these stations later in the year could also set the driest season overall as well.


Top of the Page Snowfall

1.On March 2nd, 2002 13.6 inches of snow fell at Grand Rapids, MI. This is a new 24 hour daily snowfall record. The previous record was 13.2 inches set on March 25-26th, 1970.

2. On March 14, 2002 15.0 inches of snow fell at Kennebec, SD. This broke the old daily record of 5.0 inches and is a new monthly record for a one day snowfall in March. The old March record was 12 inches set on March 17, 1957.

3. As of March 30, 2002, the seasonal snowfall at the NWS office in Marquette, MI reached 300.0 inches. This was 27.8 inches over the previous seasonal record of 272.2 inches set in the 1996-1997 season. Normal seasonal snowfall through March 25th is 152.8 inches. The 12.8 inches that fell on March 15th is a new calendar day snowfall record. This is the 7th calendar day snowfall record set since February 1st. The March 2002 snowfall total so far is 81.7 a new March record. The old all time March record was 60.6 inches set in 1976.

4. On March 16-17, 2002 at the Ted Stevens International Airport in Anchorage, AK 28.7 inches of snow fell, this amount broke the old daily record of 15.6 inches. Snow amounts ranged from 24 to 29 inches at lower elevations with 5 to 10 inches recorded along the upper hillside. Outside of Anchorage snowfall totals were light, with several inches of snow falling in southern Turnagain Arm and in the Matanuska Valley. Light snow began to fall in Anchorage at 5 pm on the 16th and continued through the evening of the 17th. The heaviest snowfall occurred between 10 pm on the 16th and 3 pm on the 17th, when 21 inches of snow was observed at the airport. Daily snowfall totals were 3 inches on the 16th and 25.7 inches on the 17th.


Top of the Page Pressure

1. On March 21, 2002 the sea level pressure rose to 30.80 inches at the mid continent AP in Wichita, KS. This is a new record for maximum sea level pressure for the month of March. The old record was 30.79 inches set in 1980.
