1.On March 2nd, 2002 13.6 inches of snow fell at Grand Rapids, MI. This is a new 24 hour daily snowfall record. The previous record was 13.2 inches set on March 25-26th, 1970.
2. On March 14, 2002 15.0 inches of snow fell at Kennebec, SD. This broke the old daily record of 5.0 inches and is a new monthly record for a one day snowfall in March. The old March record was 12 inches set on March 17, 1957.
3. As of March 30, 2002, the seasonal snowfall at the NWS office in Marquette, MI reached 300.0 inches. This was 27.8 inches over the previous seasonal record of 272.2 inches set in the 1996-1997 season. Normal seasonal snowfall through March 25th is 152.8 inches. The 12.8 inches that fell on March 15th is a new calendar day snowfall record. This is the 7th calendar day snowfall record set since February 1st. The March 2002 snowfall total so far is 81.7 a new March record. The old all time March record was 60.6 inches set in 1976.
4. On March 16-17, 2002 at the Ted Stevens International Airport in Anchorage, AK 28.7 inches of snow fell, this amount broke the old daily record of 15.6 inches. Snow amounts ranged from 24 to 29 inches at lower elevations with 5 to 10 inches recorded along the upper hillside. Outside of Anchorage snowfall totals were light, with several inches of snow falling in southern Turnagain Arm and in the Matanuska Valley. Light snow began to fall in Anchorage at 5 pm on the 16th and continued through the evening of the 17th. The heaviest snowfall occurred between 10 pm on the 16th and 3 pm on the 17th, when 21 inches of snow was observed at the airport. Daily snowfall totals were 3 inches on the 16th and 25.7 inches on the 17th.
