Top of the Page Temperature / Dewpoint

1. The minimum temperature was 37 degrees F. at Glasgow, MT on Jan 8th, 2002. This was not only the warmest minimum for the date but also tied the all time highest minimum temperature for the month of January. The earlier years and dates were on the 16th in 1974 and on the 29th in 1992.

2. The high temperature of January 8th, 2002 reached a balmy 73 degrees F. at the NWS office in East Rapid City, SD. This not only broke the daily record of 65 degrees but was also the highest recorded temperature for the month of January. The old record was 70 degrees set in 1931.

3. On Jan 25th, 2002 the temperature reached 61 F at Waterloo, IA. This tied the old extreme maximum temperature for Waterloo, IA for the month of January. The earlier January record was 61 F, set on January 1th, 1897. (See record # 6) 4. On Jan 26th, 2002 the temperature reached 77 F at McCook, NE. This broke the old extreme maximum temperature for McCook, NE for the month of January. The old January record was 75 F, the all time Nebraska state record for January is 84 F set at Indianola in 1894.

5. On Jan 26th, 2002 the temperature reached 74 F at Norfolk, NE. This broke the old extreme maximum temperature for Norfolk, NE for the month of January. The old January record was 71 F, set on January 24th, 1981.

6. On Jan 26th, 2002 the temperature reached 65 F at Des Moines, IA and 62 at Mason City, IA. These were new daily record highs and also tied standing records (Des Moines 65 on Jan 10th, 1928 & Jan 31st, 1989) (Mason City 62 on Jan 25th, 1944) for all time warmest January temperatures. The temperature reached 65 F at Waterloo, IA which is a new record high temperature for January, the previous record was 61 on Jan 1st, 1897 and Jan 25th, 2002. The Iowa state maximum temperature for January was set at Keokuk, IA set in 1950 when the mercury hit 73 F.

7. On Jan 26th, 2002 the temperature reached 71 F at Sioux City, IA. This broke the old extreme maximum temperature for Sioux City, IA for the month of January. The old January record was 70 F, set on January 24th, 1981.

8. The high temperature at La Crosse, WI was 54 degrees on Jan 27th, 2002. This was the third consecutive day in which the temperature exceeded 50 degrees F which is a new record. The old record was two days and that occurred 9 times since 1873. In addition, the daily maximum temperature exceeded 50 F five times in January 2002 which is a new record as well. The old record was three days set back in 1880. The greatest time without seeing a 50 degree January day was from January 1948 to January 1963.

9. During the winter season of 2001-2002 the temperature at La Crosse, WI has not fallen below zero degrees F as of Jan 31st, 2002. No sub zero temperatures are predicted into early February, so the winter of 2001-2002 will go down in the record books for the latest date without a sub zero temperature. Temperature records for the station date back to October 1872. Normally the first sub zero temperature occurs on December 13th and the area usually experiences 24 days with temperatures below zero during a winter. The least number of sub zero days was two during the winter of 1997-1998. The last sub zero temperature occurred on March 1st, 2001 or 333 days ago. This is currently the ninth longest stretch without a sub zero temperature. The longest stretch was 372 days from Jan 22, 1931 until Jan 28th, 1932.

10. The temperature soared to 80 degrees F at Pinson, Alabama on January 29th, 2002. This established three records, a record high for the date, it was also a record high for the month of January, and also the highest temperature recorded so early in the year.

11. The high temperature at the Charlotte Douglas Intl AP, NC on Jan 29th 2002 was 79 degrees. This broke the daily record of 76 set in 1975 and also tied the all time record for the month of January. The all time January record was also reached on January 28th 1944 and January 11th 1949.

12. Miami Intl AP, FL reached 80 degrees F or higher on 15 days of the month in January 2002. This is a new record for number of days with highs 80 degrees F or better.

13. Temperatures at the North Little Rock AP, AR soared to 81 degrees on Jan 30th, 2002. This broke the record for the date and was also the highest temperature recorded in January since January 8th, 1979. This was also the first 80 degree temperature in January since January 27th, 1975.

14. The temperature at the Salisbury, MD airport reached 77 degrees F on Jan 30th, 2002. This broke the daily record of 72 set in 1914 and also is a new all time maximum temperature for January. The old record was 75 degrees set on January 15th, 1932.

15. The temperature at the Elizabeth City Coast Guard Air Station, NC reached 80 degrees F on Jan 30th, 2002. This broke the daily record of 77 set in 1970 and also tied the all time maximum temperature for January which was also recorded on January 15th of 1937, 1944 and 1950.

16. The temperature at the Raleigh-Durham International AP, NC reached 80 degrees F on Jan 30th, 2002. This broke the daily record of 72 set in 1968 and also is a new all time maximum temperature for January. The old record was 79 degrees which occurred on January 2nd, 1952.

17. The temperature at the Piedmont Triad Internation AP in Greensboro , NC reached 78 degrees F on Jan 30th, 2002. This broke the daily record of 74 set in 1947 and also tied the all time maximum temperature for January which was set in 1975 on the 29th and in 1944 on the 28th.

18. The temperature at the Richmond International AP, VA reached 81 degrees F on Jan 30th, 2002. This broke the daily record of 76 set in 1947 and also is a new all time maximum temperature for January. The old record was 80 degrees set on January 17th, 1943 and 1950.

19. The temperature at the Norfolk International AP, VA reached 80 degrees F on Jan 30th, 2002. This broke the daily record of 77 set in 1947 and also tied the all time maximum temperature for January which was set on January 13th, 1871.

20. An un-official temperature of -62 F at Middle Sink, UT was reported by the Utah State Climatologist on Jan 30th, 2002. Middle Sink, UT is located in the upper reached of the Logan river drainage between Logan and Bear Lake. If this reading is accepted as an official record this would be a new January record low for Utah. The current January record is -50 F set at Strawberry East in 1950. The all time record low was set at Peter's Sink at -69 F on February 1, 1985.

21. The temperature at the Jackson, KY reached 78 degrees F on Jan 31th, 2002. This broke the daily record of 64 set in 1982 and 1989 and also is a new all time maximum temperature for January.

22. The temperature at the Morgantown AP, WV reached 75 degrees F on Jan 31th, 2002. This broke the daily record of 75 set in 1950 and also tied the all time maximum temperature for January.

23. The temperature at the London/Corbin AP, KY reached 74 degrees F on Jan 31th, 2002. This broke the daily record of 66 set in 1969 and also tied the all time maximum temperature for January.

24. January 2002 at Portland, ME was the warmest January ever with a mean temperature of 30.4 degrees F or 8.7 degrees above normal. The old record was 30.2 degrees in January 1990. During January 2002, only two days were cooler than normal and 13 days of the month were 10 degrees of more above normal. Looking at the December 2002-January 2002 period, this was Portland, ME warmest such period with an average temperature of 32.6 degrees. This broke the old December-January record of 29.6 degrees set in 1957-1958 by three degrees. The December 2001-January 2002 mean average temperature was exactly 9 degrees above normal an unprecedented climatological phenomena.

25. This year, November 2001 through January 2002 the average temperature in Rochester, MN was 32.0 degrees F. this was 11.9 degrees above normal and the warmest such period on record. The old record was 30.9 degrees set during November 1913 through January 1914. Records for the station date back to 1886.

26. This year, November 2001 through January 2002 the average temperature at La Crosse WI was 35.1 degrees F. this was 10.7 degrees above normal and the warmest such period on record. The old record was 33.7 degrees set during November 1877 through January 1878. Records for the station date back to 1872.


Top of the Page Rainfall

1. Hilo, Hawaii sets new calendar day rainfall record for January. The airport in Hilo, HI received 12.20 inches of rain on Jan 29th, 2002. This shattered the previous record rainfall for any January day of 9.51 inches set on Jan 19th, 1990.


Top of the Page Snowfall

1. A trace of snow was recorded in Sacramento on the morning of Jan 23rd, 2002. The last time snow was officially reported in Sacramento was on February 27th, 1996 when a trace was also reported. The last accumulation (2 inches) was received on February 5th, 1976 and the all time record snowfall is 4 inches which fell on Jan 4-5, 1888.

2. Tuscon, AZ on Jan 30th, 2002 reported six tenths (0.6 in) of snow fell at the airport which set a new daily snowfall record. This was also the first time since March 16th, 1991 that measurable snow was observed at the airport.

3. Grand Island, NE recorded 12.0 inches of snow in a 24 hours period at the end of January 2002. This 24 hour snowfall amount shattered the old record of 8.3 inches set on January 14th, 1960. In addition, the calenday day snowfall for the 31st was 10.5 inches which ranks as the second highest January daily snowfall tying with January 2nd, 1910. The greatest calendar day January snowfall was 10.6 inches set on January 18th, 1912.

3. Hastings, NE recorded a 9.8 inch calendar day snowfall on Jan 31st, 2001. This is a new calendar day snowfall record. The old record was 8.5 inches set on January 15th, 1960.
