Top of the Page Temperature / Dewpoint

1. On April 3rd, 2002 the temperature fell to 12 degrees F. at Russell, KS. This is a new all time record low for the month of April. The previous record low minimum temperature was 14 degrees F. set on April 6, 1944 and April 12, 1997.

2. The temperature reached 91 degrees in the St. Paul/Minneapolis area on April 15th, 2002. This broke the daily record of 82 set in 1915 and 1976. This was the earliest in April that 90 or higher was recorded, the previous earliest date was on the 25th of the month back in 1990 when the mercury hit 95 F. The 95 F reading is also the record high for April. At the beginning of April 2002, there was 4-7 inches of snow on the ground. Interestingly enough, the station picked up 6.2 inches of snow on the 21st, a new daily record.

3. The 94 F. readings at Grand Island and Hastings, Nebraska on April 15th, 2002 were the warmest temperatures ever observed this early in the year. The low temperature of 61 F. at Hastings was also the warmest ever observed so early in the year.

4. On April 15, 2002 at Sioux City, IA the temperature reached 96 F. This broke the daily record of 85 F. set in 1898 but also is the hottest temperature recorded so early in the season. The previous record was 97 degrees F on April 22, 1980.

5. At the Mercer county AP near Trenton, NJ the temperature reached 90 F on April 16, 2002. This broke the old daily record of 82 F set in 1976 but also is a new record for the earliest 90 degree or higher reading for the season. The old record occurred on April 17, 1976 when the mercury hit 92 degrees.

6. The temperature reached 96 F at Central Park, NY on April 17, 2002. This broke the daily record of 91 set back in 1976 and also ties the all time record high temperature for April which was also set on April 18, 1976.

7. The temperature reached 95 F at Philadelphia, PA on April 17, 2002. This broke the daily record of 92 set in 1976 but the 95 F was also the warmest recorded in the month of April. The previous April record was 94 F set on April 18, 1976. The temperature also hit 90 degrees on the 18th as well making that the third day in a row with 90 or + temperatures in April. This has only happened in 1896 and 1990. The april record of 4 days of 90 or + temperatures occurred in 1976.

8. The temperature reached 94 F at Atlantic City Intl AP, NJ on April 17, 2002. This broke the daily record of 88 set back in 1976. The 94 F reading ties the all time record high reading for April which was previously set on April 27, 1969.

9. The temperature reached 95 F at Reagan Intl AP (Washington, DC-Downtown), DC on April 17, 2002. This broke the daily record of 93 set back in 1976. The 95 F reading ties the all time record high reading for April which was previously set historically three times during the month.

10. The temperature reached 91 F at the North Little Rock AP, AR on April 18, 2002. This broke the daily record of 89 set back in 1948. This was also the earliest date that the temperature has reached 90 degrees since 1974 and the first 90 degrees in April since 1987.

11. During April 2002 so far, the high temperature at Moline, IL reached 90 or better twice during the month. This ties April 2002 with April 1930, the only other time when that has happened.

12. On April 19, 2002 the average daily temperature at Greensboro, NC was 78 F. This is a new warmest day on record for the month of April. The low temperature was 66 F which was the highest minimum recorded during the month and the maximum temperature was 90 F which ties the record for the date.

13. On April 20, 2002 the temperature reached 95 F at the Charleston Intl AP, SC. This broke the daily record of 93 set in 1968 but also is a new record high for April. The old record was 94 which was set on April 27, 1989. The 95 F reading was also the earliest occurrence of a 95 degree reading, the previous earliest date was May 2, 1990.

14. April 2002 was the warmest April ever in Tallahassee, FL . The average monthly temperature was 72.3 F which was about 6.0 F warmer than normal. The old record was 72.1 set in 1954, records for the station began back in 1885.

15. The average monthly temperature in Glasgow, MT for the two month March -April 2002 period was just 25.5 F. This is a new record for the coldest March-April period. The previous record was 25.8 degrees set in March-April 1965.


Top of the Page Rainfall

1. It's been dry in parts of Montana. In Glasgow, MT the total precipitation for the nine month period from August 2001 through April 2002 was just 2.44 inches. The previous August-April record was 2.87 inches which occurred in 1987-1988.


Top of the Page Snowfall

1. The 2001-2002 seasonal snowfall accumulation reached 318.6 inches of snow at Marquette, MI as of the end of April 2002. This is a new record eclipsing the old record of 272.2 inches set in the 1996-1997 season and the 300 inch + total is 148.1 inches above normal for the season. Since February 1, 2002 there have been 9 daily record snowfalls at the Marquette NWS office as well as new monthly records in February and March 2002.


Top of the Page Wind

1. A severe thunderstorm produced a wind gust to 74 mph at 825 pm at Springfield, IL on April 19, 2002. This wind gust is the highest on record for the month of April. The old record was 63 MPH on April 30, 1984. This is also the third highest gust on record with the all time speed measured at 98 MPH on June 14, 1957. Wind records began at Springfield on 1879 and were measured at the downtown station until 1947.


Top of the Page Pressure

1. On April 15th, 2002 the sea-level pressure dropped to 29.00 inches of mercury at the Salt Lake City, UT station. The breaks the all-time low pressure reading for the station of 29.01 inches set on December 1, 1982 and also is a new April record, breaking the old record of 29.14 inches set on April 22, 1960.


Top of the Page Miscellaneous

1. The high temperature at Quincy, WA during the past 24 hours ending at 4:00 PM on April 19, 2002 was 66 degrees this broke the old record of 61 degrees set in 1961. The low temperature during the same period was just 43 degrees. This sets another record for the date as the warmest low temperature. The old warmest low for the date was 39 set in 1995. Records for the station began in 1941.
