The Surface Weather Observations (SWO) cabinet is the largest in WSSRD. It contains hourly weather data from over 700 U.S. locations. There are some forms from before 1920, but almost all are from the late 1920s to the present year.
Much of the weather and climate data recorded by the founding fathers of this country (Washington, Jefferson and Franklin to name a few) were archived in original manuscripts, then microfilmed and stored at the National Archive and Records Administration (NARA). Those records available from NARA on microfilm have been imaged and placed on the WSSRD system. To date, there are more than 42 million of those images on-line. These colonial diaries and data are a treasure trove to the climatologist seeking data on climate of the 19th century.
NOAA's Cooperative Weather Observer Network is the nation's largest weather network. It was established under the Organic Act of 1890 to formalize the collection of meteorological observations and establish/record climate conditions in the United States, primarily for agricultural purposes. Today, more than 11,000 Cooperative Weather Observers across the United States collect daily hydrometeorological data.
This collection contains records kept at U.S. Army Forts stations in the 19th century, as well as records of the U.S. Signal Service, a predecessor to the National Weather Service. Also included are voluntary observers' records submitted to the Signal Service and the Smithsonian Institution during the same period.
This cabinet contains monthly weather reports from 1893-1948. These highly detailed observations range in frequency from 2-4 times daily.
Monthly Climatic Data for the World (MCDW) is a monthly publication of monthly summary climatic data from around the world. Data are prepared by Members of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for selected stations and exchanged monthly via international telecommunications. The publication has separate sections for Surface and Upper Air Observations, and is stored as a PDF file.
Storm Data is a monthly publication of NCDC. Issues from Jan 1959 to the current date are available in WSSRD. Three issues have been included in the Sample Storm Data Cabinet, ranging over 3 decades. Not only do they cover major weather events, but they show the technological advances in the production of this publication. |
