NCDC Sets New Record for Data Downloaded – Over 1.9 Petabytes!

NCDC set a new record of 1.911 petabytes for total data downloaded by customers during the 2012 fiscal year (FY). If that volume of downloaded data were converted to high-definition television video, it would play for more than 25 years without repeat. This new record is a 40-fold increase over FY 2005’s 47 terabytes and compares to only 1.285 petabytes downloaded in FY 2011. Increases in online data delivery are driven by several factors, including rapid growth of online data accessibility (all online data are now free), more robust data delivery systems, rapid increases in the usage of the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership satellite data, and rising usage of the NOAA Climate.gov Portal.
