The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) is a worldwide building technology society that focuses on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, refrigeration, and sustainability within the industry. ASHRAE’s goal is to shape tomorrow’s built environment today through research, standards writing, publishing, and continuing education. And NCDC is helping them achieve this goal by participating in their Climate Information Committee and by providing ASHRAE with essential climate data.

Over the past year, NCDC aided in the 2013 update of the ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals, which includes a chapter on climate information. Engineers use ASHRAE’s Handbook of Fundamentals to design heating, cooling, and ventilation systems as well as in commercial building design and many other applications.  The climate information chapter contains detailed climate summary tables, available on DVD, for 6,443 global sites using NCDC’s Integrated Surface Database—a database of global hourly and synoptic observations—as a primary source. ASHRAE also developed a separate product called the Weather Data Viewer, which provides additional capabilities for users looking for weather and climate information.

Collaborating with ASHRAE is just one example of NCDC’s efforts to actively ensure various business sectors have the climate information they need to make climate-smart decisions about the future.
